Create Unique Looks Using Decorative Concrete
Decorative concrete has become a very popular way for homeowners to add curb appeal to their property. One way they are accomplishing this is by creating a unique custom look using decorative concrete in their driveway and home exterior. A driveway is usually one of the first things people will notice when looking at a house. Its’s clearly visible from the street can make a big impression on the overall look of your home. For homeowners looking to add flair to their curb appeal, this flooring option can be the answer. The durability and design versatility of decorative concrete makes it very popular for other areas of a home exterior as well. Areas like walkways, pool decks, and patios are just a few places it can be implemented to enhance the look of a property.
For example, the driveway has become an essential part of the exterior of a home and can provide an inviting image. Years ago, deciding on a driveway material was simple and consisted of two options, asphalt, or concrete. Today, the options have expanded to include an array of decorative options. It’s also one of the most reasonable ways to enhance the entrance to your home and add curb appeal. Why choose a decorative concrete driveway? Let’s look at some of the key benefits that come with this flooring option.
1. Great Looks – Decorative concrete can be supplied in a wide variety of colors, textures, patterns, and designs. Its eye-catching appeal can be produced by using dyes, stains, oxides, and sealers.
2. Flexible Options – Decorative concrete offers a wide variety of choice and can imitate stone, brick, cobblestone, and slate. It can also be colored, stamped, acid-etched or polished.
3. Long Lasting – Decorative concrete floors, patios, and driveways are built to last. Concrete is exceptionally durable and can withstand pressure, heavy loads, and extreme weather conditions. This flooring option is economical and provides long-term value.
4. It’s Eco-Friendly – Limestone, the richest mineral on the planet is the raw material in cement. With the use of limestone and other waste by-products, decorative concrete promotes green, eco-friendly solutions.
5. Very Low Maintenance – Decorative concrete promotes dust, dirt, and debris free surfaces that are easy to maintain. It is also mold and allergen resistant, offering a healthy and safe surface.
So, these are the 5 key benefits that decorative concrete provides. Below we highlight a project that displays how different types of decorative concrete can be implemented around the exterior of a house. Homeowners take great pride in their home and the owners of this beautiful house in Plantation Florida were no different. The owners wanted to update the look of their driveway and surrounding exterior and selected Artistic Surfaces to help elevate the curb appeal of the house.
In this project, we updated the old asphalt driveway to a whole new look. Keeping appeal and functionality in mind the new driveway incorporates the function of a concrete driveway with the aesthetic of a lawn. We created the look of giant pavers that lay perfectly flushed in grass. This new driveway helps add green space to the front of the property without having the maintenance that is required with a lawn.
Carport and Garage Area
Moving beyond the front of the house to the carport, this area features a big diamond shape design. The diamond is stained with a dark gray pigment to help define the shape and draw the eye. This gray color continues to the back of the house in the form of a thin strip that ends at a back entrance that also doubles as a seating area. Adding contrast to the decorative concrete is a very distinct narrow band of running brick pavers. These pavers are each uniquely cut to specific dimensions and laid end-to-end to create a look that lends appealing layers of color and texture. This strip of brick pavers creates a pathway that connects the garage area to the pool located in the back of the house.
A home's front walkway should make a good first impression and create a clear path to the door. There are several cost-effective ways to beautify regular poured concrete walkways. Acid stains, concrete dying, and stamping are just a few ways to create unique looks.
For this home, we created two unique walkways that touch on both a modern and classic look. For the front of the house, we created a solid concrete walkway to the front door. This walkway displays a series of rectangular shapes, that were etched into the concrete using a hand saw to create the look of pavers. This design helps keep the look consistent with the driveway and adds a modern feel.
Walkways can also define areas of your landscape while connecting different areas of a home. For the back of the house, we created a brick walkway that adds timeless appeal. This brick walkway was painstakingly crafted cutting each brick to unique dimensions and runs through the landscaping of the house and portions the decorative concrete located in the garage area.
Patio and Pool
Decorative concrete is excellent for creating pool decks and patios that complement the exterior of a home. The area around the pool and patio are used for various activities like entertaining guest, sunbathing and cooking. This flooring option can be used to create a welcoming and inviting environment and with an array of decorative options, one can create a mini oasis right in their backyard.
For the pool and patio area of this home artistic surfaces installed decorative concrete floors that complement this modern outdoor area perfect for relaxing and entertaining. We completely redid the pool with long geometric lines and 90-degree angles, giving it a sleek modern look. The surrounding area of the patio and walkway adjacent to the pool features linear saw cut lines that give the appearance of control joints and complement the geometric angles of the pool.
